As the morning sun stretched across the Masindi hills – a journey of no less than 200km from the Ugandan capital Kampala, children walked steadily toward Sunny Magezi Academy located at the Aliguma Foundation Sports and Empowerment Centre in Kinuuma Village - not just to attend school, but to begin a journey that, for many, marked their very first term in a new learning environment.
It was the beginning of something special in February this year.

A School Comes to Life
As learners arrived with their parents, they were warmly received and guided to the administrative block where their details were carefully reviewed to determine placement. In those early moments, anticipation filled the air—expectations, excitement, and a touch of nervousness as everyone stepped into a new world of learning.
The compound quickly came alive. Old little friends reunited with joy and laughter, while others stood quietly, observing their surroundings with curiosity. Teachers moved briskly across the grounds, welcoming each child, holding registers and lesson plans—already preparing to shape the weeks ahead with purpose and care.

Powering Learning with Solar Energy
In a community where electricity supply is limited, the introduction of solar power at Sunny Magezi Academy marked a major transformation.
For the first time, classrooms, offices, and key areas of the school were illuminated, bringing life to spaces that once relied on daylight alone. Staff can now work more efficiently—charging devices, using laptops, and feeling secure even after sunset.
What makes this milestone even more remarkable is its sustainability. The solar system provides uninterrupted energy, a reliable source of power that continues to support both learning and administration.
The installation process was made possible through the support of service providers, alongside the dedication of our non-teaching staff who assisted in lifting equipment onto rooftops. The system installed is capable of powering the entire school, and we are now extending lighting infrastructure to additional key areas as construction continues.

Strengthening Safety: The Perimeter Wall
Child safety remains a core priority at Sunny Magezi Academy.
To ensure a secure learning environment—especially for our boarding students—a perimeter wall is currently under construction. This structure is designed to protect the school community from external intrusion, both day and night.
The project also includes the installation of a main gate and a secure security post where personnel will be stationed, further strengthening safety across the school grounds.

Media Day: Opening Our Doors to the World
On Friday, 27th March 2026, Sunny Magezi Academy hosted its first Media Day—a half-day event that opened the school to the wider community and the world.
It was a vibrant and interactive occasion filled with photography sessions, demonstrations, and meaningful conversations between school leadership, the Aliguma Foundation team, teachers, and guests.
Clad in UEFA Foundation for Children colours, both teachers and learners showcased their talents—on and off the ball—demonstrating the holistic approach to education that defines the school’s vision.
It was a day of storytelling, transparency, and shared pride in what is being built.

Creating Space for Play and Growth
At Sunny Magezi Academy, play is seen as essential to every child’s development.
A dedicated play area is being developed into a safe, structured space where children can explore, interact, and grow.
The enclosure is being completed to ensure supervision and safety, while play equipment has already been introduced to support creativity, coordination, and expression.
This investment reflects a commitment to holistic education—where learning extends beyond the classroom.

Welcoming Parents into the Journey
On Saturday, 28th March, the school hosted parents for a familiarization visit that brought the school community closer together.
The day included a Parent-Teacher engagement session where open dialogue took place, followed by a guided tour of classrooms. Parents were able to see their children’s learning environment firsthand and review their academic work.
The visit concluded with a tour of school facilities and a shared meal, reinforcing the partnership between families and the school in shaping each child’s future.

Expanding Facilities: New Washroom Block
As the school grows, so does the need for improved infrastructure.
A new, larger washroom facility is currently under construction to accommodate students, staff, and visiting parents.
Unlike the existing block located near the dormitories, this new structure is strategically positioned for broader access while maintaining privacy and safety for learners.
The design has also been reinforced to support overhead water tanks, ensuring improved sanitation systems across the school.

Looking Ahead: The Transport Challenge
Despite the progress made, one major challenge remains—the lack of reliable transport to and from the school.
Many prospective learners come from distant communities, and transport has been a consistent barrier during enrollment drives. While the school provides boarding facilities, many parents still prefer daily transport options, especially for younger children.
To address this, the acquisition of at least two school vans has been identified as a critical next step. This would significantly improve accessibility and increase enrollment, helping more children benefit from the opportunities at Sunny Magezi Academy.

A Season of Gratitude and Growth
The first term at Sunny Magezi Academy has been defined by milestones, learning, and transformation.
From infrastructure development to community engagement, from safety systems to learning environments, each step has contributed to building more than a school—it is the building of a future.
With gratitude to all partners, staff, parents, and supporters, the journey continues.
