Aliguma Foundation Strengthens Inclusive Education Through Staff Training At Sunny Magezi Academy

Updated: 2 days ago

When Sunny Magezi Academy welcomed its first 30 learners in November last year, the vision stretched far beyond opening another school in Masindi.

The ambition was to create a place where every child - regardless of background, ability or circumstance - would feel safe, valued and given the opportunity to flourish.

Today, as enrolment continues to steadily grow, Aliguma Foundation is ensuring that the people entrusted with shaping those young lives continue to grow too.

From April 24-26 this year, all members of staff underwent a comprehensive Inclusivity and Practical Curriculum Delivery Training programme, an initiative designed to strengthen professional standards and equip the team with the skills needed to respond to the evolving needs of every learner.

Facilitated by inclusion advocate Ms. Abitegeka Sally, Head Teacher of Kahaara Primary School, together with Sunny Magezi Academy Principal Ms. Shirley Akeso, the three-day programme focused on understanding disability, special needs and the everyday responsibility of building an environment where every child belongs.

For Principal Shirley Akeso, inclusion is not an extra responsibility. It is the foundation upon which the school is being built.

"At Sunny Magezi Academy, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and be understood," Akeso said.
"As our school continues to grow, we must ensure that our staff grow alongside it. Inclusion is not a special programme that we switch on and off. It is a daily practice that should be reflected in our classrooms, our language and our interactions with every learner and every family."

More than labels

One of the key areas covered during the training was understanding the difference between disability and special needs.

Staff explored how disabilities may affect physical, sensory or cognitive functioning, while special needs can also include learning difficulties, speech and language delays, behavioural challenges, gifted learners and children who simply require additional support.

The message throughout the sessions was clear. Children should never be defined by labels.

Instead, teachers were encouraged to see the person first and to build learning environments that respond to individual needs with patience, empathy and dignity.

The training also addressed the importance of respectful language, practical classroom adjustments and working closely with parents and guardians to support learners.

Akeso believes that changing attitudes can be just as important as changing teaching methods.

"Language shapes how people feel about themselves and how society treats them," she explained.
"When we put the person before the condition, we create trust. We create belonging. That is exactly the kind of school community we want to build."

Investing In The Future

The continued investment in staff development reflects Aliguma Foundation's wider commitment to quality education.

As more families from across Masindi District continue to entrust the school with their children, the foundation recognises that excellent learning outcomes begin with empowered educators.

The training forms part of an ongoing professional development programme aimed at ensuring staff are equipped not only to teach but also to nurture, support and inspire.

At the conclusion of the workshop, staff members signed professionalism commitment forms, pledging to uphold the principles of inclusion, safeguard every learner and contribute positively towards the school's vision and mission.

According to Akeso, the signing ceremony represented much more than an administrative exercise.

"Those signatures were promises," she said. "Promises that every child who walks through our gates will be treated with dignity, respect and compassion. We want every learner to know that this is a place where they belong and where they can achieve their potential."

A Shared Journey

The growth of Sunny Magezi Academy is the product of many hands working together.

Aliguma Foundation extends its sincere appreciation to its valued partners, UEFA Foundation for Children, whose support continues to strengthen programmes that place children's welfare and education at the centre of community development.

The foundation also recognises the trust shown by parents, guardians and the people of Masindi District, whose belief in the school's mission has seen enrolment continue to rise from the original pioneer class of 30 learners.

Every child brought to school represents a family's hope for a brighter future.

Every teacher trained represents an investment in making that hope a reality.

As Sunny Magezi Academy continues its journey, Aliguma Foundation remains committed to building more than classrooms and buildings.

It is building professionals. It is building confidence. It is building an inclusive community where every child matters.

And perhaps most importantly, it is proving that the strongest schools are not simply measured by the number of pupils they enroll, but by the number of lives they are prepared to embrace.
