The Aliguma Foundation, in collaboration with Tufts University and Makerere University, officially launched the "Support to Environment Defenders in Informal Settlements of Kampala" an initiative financed by USAID, on October 15, 2024.

Waste To Wealth: The environmental defenders showcase the products that they have been able to make from the dumped waste to the delight of the delegates and officials at the launch.

Held at God’s Care Community School in Acholi Quarters, Banda, the event showcased the foundation's commitment to tackling waste management challenges in Kampala’s underserved areas, particularly through community-driven solutions focused on recycling, reusing, and reducing plastic waste.

Vibrant platform

Attendees were treated to a variety of activities, from insightful presentations on Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) regarding waste management by Makerere University researchers to performances by local school children who shared messages of environmental sustainability through song and dance.

The launch also saw participation from community leaders, religious figures, and several local groups actively engaged in waste reduction efforts.

The event provided a vibrant platform for showcasing how waste can be turned into economic opportunities, particularly for women and youth in the informal settlements.

In attendance were local leaders, religious figures, and youth-driven groups such as the Banda-Nakawa Youth Mission Against Poverty, Space-Medium Youth Group, and Urban Farmers, among others.
