The good news keeps coming at Sunny Magezi Academy.  For the better part of this year, that has been the story at the academy - one of steady progress.

From teacher capacity-building sessions held during the school holidays to a strong start to the second term, the academy continues to move in the right direction. Nestled on the 15-acre Aliguma Foundation Sports and Empowerment Centre (AFSEC) property in Kinuuma Village, Masindi District, the school has quietly become a model of what is possible when education, sport and community development are brought together with purpose.

And people are beginning to notice.

What started as a dream championed by the Aliguma Foundation and supported by the UEFA Foundation for Children is now attracting attention from institutions and organizations beyond its founding partners.

The latest show of confidence has come from a familiar friend.

Friend of the foundation

The United States Embassy in Uganda, which has maintained a close relationship with the Aliguma Foundation since 2022, has donated a sizeable collection of furniture, educational materials and office accessories to Sunny Magezi Academy.

The donation was formally handed over by Veronica Ssempebwa, Public Engagement Specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Uganda, and received by school administrators Ritah Aliguma, Shirley Akeso, Doreen Namuyiga and Saltry Lubega. In 2022, Aliguma was one of the picks to attend the Global Sports Mentorship Program (GSMP), which she attended in 2023 and 2024.

The contribution arrives at a timely moment as the academy continues to grow both in enrollment and ambition. Among the items delivered were four large teacher tables, 13 office drawers, six filing cabinets, one bookshelf and 10 office chairs.

The embassy also donated a range of educational and recreational materials including colour crayons, writing notepads, Amazon Basic erasers, premium colour-copy paper, glue, dozens of pencils and Bic pens.

For the learners, there was even more excitement.

The donation included wooden chess sets, checkers, mathematics readiness books, giant colouring and activity books, addition and subtraction learning materials, Lego sets, Jenga Games, educational board games and lighting balls that will enrich both classroom learning and play.

More than furniture

To an outsider, these may appear to be ordinary items. To Sunny Magezi Academy, they represent something much bigger.

Every cabinet helps improve organization. Every chair creates a better working environment. Every book opens another door to learning. Every game introduces a child to creativity, teamwork and problem-solving.

Most importantly, the donation sends a powerful message that the work happening in Kinuuma Village matters. It is another endorsement of a project that continues to prove that children from rural and vulnerable communities deserve the same opportunities as anyone else.

Connection that made difference

The donation was made possible through the efforts of U.S Embassy official Lana Surface, who earlier this year attended the Aliguma Foundation Slum Soccer Tournament as Guest of Honour.

After learning more about the mission of Sunny Magezi Academy and the challenges facing learners in the community, she mobilized support that eventually resulted in the donation.

Her efforts have now translated into tangible improvements that learners and staff will benefit from every day.

Investing in the future

Aliguma Foundation Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ritah Aliguma described the contribution as a significant boost to the school's growth journey.

"Every desk, chair and cabinet donated represents hope, opportunity and a better future for our learners. We are deeply grateful to the U.S. Embassy in Uganda for believing in our mission and investing in the education of vulnerable children in Masindi. The furniture came at a timely moment."

For Sunny Magezi Academy Principal Shirley Akeso, the donation goes beyond physical items.

"To our generous donor, the U.S. Embassy in Uganda, thank you for seeing the value in small hands and big dreams. We didn't know how to ask, but you gave anyway.
“The desks are in place, the pencils are sharpened, and our children walked in this morning like they owned the place simply because someone decided they deserved to.
“Your gift of furniture and stationery has transformed our learning spaces into places where every child feels prepared, valued and ready to grow. What you've given is far more than materials. You've given our children the dignity of a proper learning environment. We are deeply grateful."

Future Sights. As a growing network of supporters continues to back Sunny Magezi Academy's rise in Masindi, such modern school set-ups will become a normalcy like the current view of the Principal's office (L) and the classroom with the teachers' locker and cabinet (R) at the newly-opened learning center.

Gaining momentum

Supported by the UEFA Foundation for Children, Sunny Magezi Academy continues to serve children from disadvantaged backgrounds while combining education, sport and life skills development.

As classrooms become better equipped and partnerships continue to grow, the academy's journey is becoming a story that reaches far beyond Masindi.

For the children who fill its classrooms every day, however, the impact is much simpler.

A better chair to sit on. A proper desk to learn from. A book to read. A game to inspire curiosity.

And another reminder that people, both near and far, believe in their future. That future is looking brighter with every passing term.
